The earthquake of 1968 devastated the entire Belice region and the towns of Gibellina and Poggioreale in particular. New Gibellina is one of Italy’s most interesting landscape architectures. It is a veritable museum en plain air, with dozens of monumental sculptures spread out in its streets and avenues, each giving an interpretation of this art town, built after the earthquake. New Gibellina is not a ‘normal’ town, it is a utopia in the making, albeit hanging precariously between the pull of the past and the push of the future.
