Capital of Sicilian baroque, and a World Heritage Site, Noto is one of the cities that were rebuilt ex-novo in the late 17th century. It was raised some 15km away from the site of the original town (Noto Antica) at a strategic location where the counties of Modica and Ragusa met the important port town of Syracuse. It has many fine churches that are outstanding on account of their architecture, fine decorations, and the local limestone used, which gives the town its characteristic honey-like hue, which is particularly evident as the sun sets. Another characterizing trait of Noto of their strategic location, and its rational planning – long straight and level streets with many superb open spaces.
