During this two-hour walk through the enchanting streets and alleys of Ortigia, the historic centre of Syracuse, your expert guide (archaeologist or historian) will introduce you to the complex history of Syracuse. The tour will spotlight the key monuments of the island, from the Greek age to Modern times. The itinerary will cover the ruins of Apollo’s temple, the oldest doric temple in the Western Mediterranean, the Fountain Arethusa, which faces the Great Harbour, and the Jewish quarter. One of the main points of interest will be the Duomo square, famous for its magnificent Cathedral dedicated to the nativity of the Virgin Mary, and built over a Doric temple. The exquisite square is surrounded by elegant Baroque buildings such as Palazzo Beneventano del Bosco, Palazzo Borgia del Casale and Saint Lucy’s Church.
At the end of your stroll, you will enjoy an aperitif at a traditional enoteca. This is a good opportunity to ask your guide about wine making traditions in Sicily.
