Morgantina is one of the most important archaeological sites in Sicily. It is home to well-preserved Sicel, Greek, and Roman remains. Sanctuaries to the Goddesses Demeter and Persephone complete the rich agricultural plain in which these sites are found.
Your local guide and archaeologist will elaborate on the site’s well-preserved agora or city square; planned during the 5th century B.C.E., this public space was enriched with numerous government and religious buildings until the end of the 3rd century B.C.E., when the polis was conquered by Romans. You will also look at the main political and administrative seats of the polis, a theatre, a Ctonian Gods’ sanctuary, numerous porticos, and much more.
The tour ends at the small albeit important archaeological museum of Aidone, which holds precious artifacts from Morgantina, among which the acrolithic statues of Demeter and Persephone, the silver Treasure of Eupolemos, and the magnificent “Venere” di Morgantina, as well as the terracotta head of Hades, which were recently repatriated from museums in America.
Tour duration: ca. 3.5h

The day with Serena at Morgantina and the Casa Romana del Casale was a special highlight. How often does one have the opportunity to spend time with a national hero? Ted. C.

Cara Serena,
Gervase R.
