This guided walk starts with an easy hike that runs through superb Giant Hollies, a unique site of this kind in Sicily, and a great example of the biodiversity of Madonie Park. This walk is ideal for groups looking for an experience in the Sicilian countryside, including families with children. We begin our walk at the Crispi refuge (1200 mt), and follow a trail through a lush vegetation, up to Piano Pomo, which offers splendid views, and where an old barn is located. It is there that the several centuries old Giant Hollies are found. Some of these majestic trees can reach heights of 20m or more. Following an enjoyable picnic in the woods (optional), your guide will take you to the estate of a young producer of Manna. Manna is Castelbuono’s greatest natural jewel, and is widely known as the white gold of Sicily.
This precious sap pours out of ash trees when their trunk gets cut. You will learn about its extraction, an ancient process passed on from generation to generation, and which only survives in the Pollina-Castelbuono area. During the visit you will taste Manna and discover the many uses for this substance, in cuisine, natural medicine and cosmetics.
