The mafia “wars” have tainted the reputation of Palermo, and during this guided walk, you shall see what efforts are being made today to release the city from its hand, but also from myths and prejudices. This walk will take you to the Teatro Massimo (Palermo’s Opera House where important scenes of the Godfather were shot, and where we can begin to deconstruct a certain narrative of the mafia), Piazza della Memoria (memorial dedicated to the judges executed by the mafia), Piazza San Domenico (where numerous victims of the mafia are buried), Piazza Beati Paoli (where you will become familiar with the origins of the mafia), Palermo’s cathedral (where your guide will shed some lights on the relationship between the mafia and the church), the Kala (murales of the Falcone-Borsellino), to cite some of the most relevant places of interest. We will also make stops to shops and local eateries that have rebelled against the pizzo (the mafia racket) asked by the mafia, and that have launched a veritable campaign against it, known as “pago chi non paga” (I give money to those who don’t pay the pizzo).
